MACEDONIA PRESENTS ITS POSITION ON LAST NAME PROPOSALS OF UN MEDIATOR

Negotiator Nikola Dimitrov and Chief of the PM's Cabinet Martin Protoger presented Wednesday in New York the position of the Republic of Macedonia to UN mediator Matthew Nimetz on his latest set of ideas for the name dispute settlement.
- We have set forth and reaffirmed the arguments standing behind the interests of the country and the nation, a correspondent of the Voice of America-Macedonian language program quoted Dimitrov's statement after the meeting.
The meeting of Macedonia's negotiating team with Nimetz was useful, Dimitrov said, but revealed no more details.
- It's too early to say whether Nimetz will visit Athens and Skopje, but he will certainly get in touch with the Greek side sometime soon," Dimitrov added.
Thus far, Macedonia's position on Nimetz's ideas have not been officially presented. Recently the state leadership held two consultation meetings, revealing no details on the outcome. Initial statements of President Branko Crvenkovski and Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski were the only official reaction to Nimetz's latest proposal, saying that without serious corrections the UN mediator's ideas did not set a solid base for settlement.
Yesterday evening in Strumica, Crvenkovski reiterated that the settlement was possible only by accepting the Macedonian nation and language as the foundation of the national identity.
- If UN guarantees that the name of our nation is Macedonian nation and the name of our language is the Macedonian language, which are the main pillars of the national identity of each nation, then we should reach an agreement, Crvenkovski said.
After yesterday's meeting with U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs, Stuart E. Jones, Foreign Minister Antonio Milososki also failed to offer more details on Macedonia's position, saying that upon consultations with President Crvenkovski and PM Gruevski, Dimitrov and Protoger would have the opportunity to present to Nimetz the country's position, which is in line with its national interests.
Today, Greek Foreign Minister Dora Bakoaynnis told the Parliament Commissions for Foreign Affairs and Security that the last proposal of UN mediator Matthew Nimetz contained provisions that were acceptable for Greece, but also ones that were against its interests and should be cleared up.
The negotiations under the UN aegis are resuming and Athens has neither speeding up nor obstruct them, radio 'City' quoted Bakoaynnis, who also blamed Skopje authorities for their attempt to slow down the process.
- Greece favors one name with geographic determinant for overall usage, Bakoaynnis said, adding that Athens should not be forced to cross its 'red lines'.
