JOHN CAVANAUGH - IRI: CONSTANT SUPPORT FOR NATO MEMBERSHIP IN MACEDONIA

The huge public support in Macedonia for admission in NATO means that the citizens understand that the stability of the country will attract foreign investments and will stimulate economic growth, John Cavanaugh, Director for Macedonia within the International Republican Institute said in the interview with Voice of America programme on Macedonian language.
IRI's surveys in Macedonia show constant support for membership in the NATO and admission in the EU. The support to NATO is 91% which represents the same figure as in the previous survey in June. The support to EU is 95% the same as the previous one, Cavanaugh assessed.
He interpreted the huge support, as Macedonians understand that the economic development depends on admission in the Euro-Atlantic institutions.
Cavanaugh pointed out that IRI conducts researches on government's rating since 2006.
- We notice especially huge support for the government. The support is constant from 2006 to June 2007. But the latest survey showed drop in optimism among the voters. The people are slightly unsatisfied and negative observance to political and social structures in the country has increased, Cavanaugh.
According to him the mood of the Macedonian citizens is due to several factors - economic and political.
- On one side the citizens see on the issue of regional stability and carefully monitor the issue regarding the final Kosovo status starting to realise that this could destabilise Macedonia. On domestic plan people are concerned for the relatively low political dialogue between the ruling and opposition parties, John Cavanaugh considers.
The key for resolving the social and economic problems is creation of climate for attraction of foreign investments, John Cavanaugh said.

GOVERNMENTS DECIDES AGAINST SIGNING SALES CONTRACT WITH "HATCH" CONSORTIUM ON TEC "NEGOTINO"

The Government has decided Thursday to stop procedure on signing a sales contract with consortium "Hatch" for thermal plant "Negotino", Vice Premier Zoran Stavreski told journalists, adding that the consortium has not met envisaged conditions.
Asked which are the conditions that the consortium had not met, Vice Premier Stavreski said that "Hatch" was obliged to submit an authorization for each of its members, and that each member is accountable with its rights and obligations.
"They only submitted such authorization from one of the four consortium members. Therefore, the Government does not have sufficient guaranties from the consortium members regarding their assets and balance sheets", added Stavreski.
According to him, "Hatch" submitted a contract, which included essential changes opposite to the tendering regulations, related to ecological standards and arbitration.
"The Government will not accept any changes in the sales contract, nor sign an agreement to the detriment of the Republic of Macedonia. Thus, we had to stop the procedure regarding the sales contract with the first-ranked company", emphasized Stavreski.
The tendering commission and the Ministry of Economy should notify the Government within five days on further procedure regarding TEC "Negotino".
