BUSH, DALAI LAMA MEET AT WHITE HOUSE

US President George W. Bush met privately Tuesday with the Dalai Lama, defying China's angry objections one day before an official US tribute to the Tibetan spiritual leader, a spokesman said.
Asked whether Bush and the Dalai Lama, whom Beijing brands a dangerous separatist bent on Tibetan independence, had met, US national security council spokesman Gordon Johndroe replied: "They did."
On Oct. 18 congressional leaders will present him with the Congressional Gold Medal, the highest civilian honor lawmakers can award. And Bush will attend the ceremony – subtly raising the Dalai Lama's status in terms of diplomatic protocol.
The importance of the move can be seen by the reaction of Chinese officials, who see Tibet as a renegade province. They're furious.

TURKISH PARLIAMENT DEBATES CROSS-BORDER ATTACK INTO IRAQ

Kurdish rebel bases in Iraq could be attacked by Turkish troops if Ankara approves a parliamentary motion supporting military action against the PKK.
Turkey’s MP’s are debating a motion authorising cross-border military operations into northern Iraq to counter escalating attacks by rebels.
The motion will authorise Turkey to take military action after Iraq ignored warnings to clamp down on the PKK.
Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan has said the motion does not mean a military operation is imminent.
But he also warned that Turkey would act decisively in its fight against terrorism.
The conflict between Turkey and Kurdish rebels dates back more than two decades and the recent deaths of 13 Turkish soldiers in a PKK ambush has put the government under immense pressure.
Turkey is a regional hub for the U.S military which is concerned that Turkish action could affect access to Incirlik airbase or other supply lines crucial to U.S forces in Iraq and Afghanistan.
