LITHUANIA BACKS MACEDONIA REGARDING EU AND NATO MEMBERSHIP

Macedonia has firm support in terms of EU and NATO membership. In addition to favourable political ties, the two countries should make more efforts in intensifying and developing the economic relations, observed Macedonian Foreign Minister Antonio Milososki and his Lithuanian counterpart Petras Vaitiekunas following their meeting on Wednesday in Skopje.
- Macedonia may always count on Lithuanian support with regard to EU and Euro-Atlantic integration, said Vaitiekunas, underlining that 68% of the citizens in his country were in favour of the Union's enlargement, according to recent polls.
- I'm pleasantly surprised by the economic and political progress of Macedonia and I expect it to be included in the European Commission's November report, said the Lithuanian Foreign Minister. He said he expected Macedonia to receive NATO membership invitation at the forthcoming NATO Summit.
FM Milososki said Macedonia was willing to remake Lithuania's success on the road towards NATO membership, adding Macedonia was also interested in the Lithuanian experience considering the EU accession.
Both ministers said they expected the favourable political cooperation to be reflected into the economic ties. An agreement on double tax evasion - due to be signed by the foreign ministers in the Macedonian Government's building - will be a step forward in accomplishing the goal.
Over the course of his visit, Minister Vaitiekunas is accompanied by a number of Lithuanian businessmen, who are due to be briefed on the investment opportunities in Macedonia.
- The Lithuanian businessmen invested hundreds of millions of dollars in the region and they are prepared to invest in Macedonia as well, said Vaitiekunas, announcing that Macedonian businessmen were invited to inspect the business potentials in Lithuania.
Vaitiekunas' three-day stay to Macedonia resumes Wednesday with separate meetings with President Branko Crvenkovski, PM Nikola Gruevski and Parliament Speaker Ljubisa Georgievski. Both Vaitiekunas and Milososki are set to visit Ohrid this afternoon.
