THE DIALOGUE ABOUT THE NAME
CONTINUES
The Secretary-General of the UN Kofi Anan and Special Envoy of the
Secretary-General Metju Nimitz met with the Greek minister for foreign
affairs, Petros Molivijatis in New York to find a solution for the question
about using the constitutional name of Macedonia.
“With the Special Envoy of the Secretary-General of UN, Metju Nimitz,
another meeting about the name of FYROM was held. Moplivijatis clearly
repeated our familiar standpoints. That means that the last Nimitz’s
propositions are considered by us as a base for the negotiations”, the
spokesman Jorgo Kumutzakos stated for the Greek press-agency ANA. He also
said that “Nimitz appreciates the Greek standpoint” and informed that he
will go on with the dialogue with members of both sides.
USA will support every agreement which will come out by mediation of the
Special Envoy of the Secretary-General of UN in relation with the despute
about the name Macedonia between the Greek and Macedonian side, the Greek
newspapers quoted the statement which was given by the American deputy
secretary of state Met Brajza.
“I’m standing behind the efforts by the special UN mediator, Metju Nimitz”,
says the American diplomat, adding that he doesn’t know if the Kofi Anan’s
envoy is preparing a new proposal for both sides. The newspapers are
reporting that the question about the name will also be the main topic on
the Washington’s discussion in Friday between the Greek vice-minister for
foreign affairs Janis Valinakis and Met Brajza. |

GREECE SENDS WARNING TO
MACEDONIA REGARDING NAME DISPUTE
Greek President Karolos Papoulias is expected to send a clear message to
Macedonia's leadership, pointing out that its European prospect is directly
connected with the solution of the name issue, Greek news agency ANA
reported on Wednesday.
According to information, President Papoulias will point out at the formal
dinner given in honor of visiting Serbia-Montenegro President Svetozar
Marovic that the European Commission response on Macedonia's EU accession
prospect is being expected and will be examined by the European Council in
December.
Papoulias is expected to point out that Greece firmly supports Macedonia's
European course, which will contribute decisively to the region's stability
and prosperity. However, this is a prospect directly connected with the
solution of the name issue.
The Greek President will also stress that the solution depends solely on the
Skopje leadership, which must rise to the occasion and consider the
consequences on the country's European course.
Papoulias will state that, "the fact that the neighboring country insists in
monopolising the name Macedonia and even engages in hostile propaganda
against Greece is a great concern".
Furthermore, Papoulias will point out that Greece has exhausted all its
goodwill and flexibility and ignored the political cost involved by making
significant steps in the effort to reach a mutually acceptable solution on
the name issue, as dictated by the 1995 interim agreement signed by himself
as the then Greek Foreign Minister. |
