VASILAKIS AGAINST DOUBLE FORMULA, DIMITROV EXPECTS "CONCRETE STEP" FROM NIMETZ

Mediator in the Macedonia-Greece name talks, Matthew Nimetz held separate meetings late Tuesday in New York with Greek negotiator Adamantios Vasilakis, followed by Macedonian negotiator Nikola Dimitrov and Chief of PM's Cabinet Martin Protoger, reports Voice of America in Macedonian language.
Asked whether he is satisfied from the talks, Vasilakis said it is too early for concrete evaluations, without expecting anything new from Wednesday's joint meeting. He told mediator Nimetz that if the other side insists on the double formula, the possible new proposal would be dead.
Dimitrov expects Nimetz to undertake a "concrete step" on Wednesday.
"We did everything to strengthen Macedonia's positions in this process and protect the country and nation's interests. We expect a short joint meeting on Wednesday, when mediator Nimetz will probably undertake a certain concrete step", added Dimitrov after the meeting.
A joint press conference of Nimetz with representatives of both countries is also scheduled today.

  GATES:
US STRONGLY SUPPORT MACEDONIA'S NATO ACCESSION

The United States strongly support Macedonia's aspirations to become a full-fledged NATO member, said U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates following Wednesday's joint meeting with President Branko Crvenkovski, Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski and Defense Minister Zoran Konjanovski.
"As many of you, we were also disappointed from this April's outcome, when Macedonia did not receive an invitation to join the Alliance at the Bucharest Summit. We urge Macedonia and Greece to immediately find a solution to the name issue, which is in the best interest of both countries and the region in general", stressed Gates at the joint press conference with Macedonian Defense Minister Zoran Konjanovski.
The U.S. Defense Secretary stated there is no other alternative in the procedure to join NATO.
"There is only one way to membership, and that is through unanimous consent by all Alliance members. The situation is complicated, we should work in this direction, and this goes not only for you, but for other countries too", added Gates.
He reiterated the commitment of the Washington administration for integration of Southeast European countries in Euro-Atlantic institutions.
Moreover, following the improvement of the security situation in Iraq, Gates encouraged countries that have troops in that country to think more on Afghanistan deployment, because of "necessity from trainers of future officers in the growing Afghan army".
