SPE LAUREATE FATOS ARAPI ARRIVES IN STRUGA

Poets from the Balkans build with their verses a special mosaic, which cannot be torn down. By doing so, they make poetry to become even stronger. The more we learn about each other, the bigger understanding and love we have for one another, Albanian poet Fatos Arapi, this year's laureate of the Struga Poetry Evenings (SPE) told MIA upon his arrival in Struga.
- I'm coming to Struga as a poet, not as an Albanian, because poetry, as well as language and culture, don't make any difference, said Arapi, who will be presented with SPE's Golden Wreath award on Sunday during the manifestation "Bridges", which traditionally closes the festival.
Fifty local and 70 foreign poets from 45 countries worldwide are to attend the 47. Struga Poetry Evenings, which will run from 21-24 August. The festival of poetry will be formally opened tomorrow in Struga's Poetry House with an international poetry reading "Poetic Meridian".
Within the frameworks of the traditional event "A Night Without Punctuation", the young Croatian poetess Antonija Novakovic, winner of the UNESCO award "Bridges Over Struga" for best young poet, will be presented.
Arapi's literary portrait will be held in "St. Sofia" church in Ohrid on August 23 with a sermon from academic Gane Todorovski. The traditional evening of national poetry this year is dedicated to Ukraine, thus a collection of contemporary Ukrainian poetry will be launched.
This year's Struga Poetry Evenings will also host numerous events, such as symposium "Language, Poetry, Identity", manifestation on marking the 100th anniversary since the birth of writer Koco Racin, international poetry meeting "Bridges" where the Golden Wreath and other awards will be presented on festival's final day.
After SPE will be closed, its participants on August 25 will have the opportunity to take part at the manifestation "Poetry on the Road" and will visit many other towns in Macedonia.

NIMETZ IN SKOPJE, TO VISIT THESSALONIKI ON FRIDAY

UN mediator in Macedonia-Greece name dispute talks Matthew Nimetz will arrive in Skopje on Thursday for talks with Macedonia's state officials in connection to the ideas outlined at a recent round of talks between Macedonia and Greece's negotiators in New York on August 13.
Nimetz will hold separate meetings with President Branko Crvenkovski and Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski, who will present their coordinated position in relation to the ideas.
After meeting separately with the countries' name negotiators in New York, Nimetz said that fresh ideas were reviewed as well as variations of old ones that were previously reviewed, adding that both sides concurred the name was the focal point of the ongoing negotiations. The mediator estimated the dispute was solvable and if closed it could pave the way for resolving many other open issues.
Meanwhile, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon in a response to the letter sent by Gruevski, notes that his envoy Matthew Nimetz will resume his efforts towards finding a solution to the name issue row. - I am aware of the existence of other issues, which you consider should become the subject for Skopje-Athens talks. I hope that by resolving the name issue, a way will be paved for better ties that will contribute to tackling these other issues and possibly to finally settling them, Ban Ki-moon wrote to Gruevski.
Nimetz on Friday will take off for Thessaloniki for a meeting with the Greek negotiator Adamantios Vassilakis. Thus far, there are no announcements for high-ranking meetings. Greek media say Greece is attempting to dodge Washington's efforts in closing the name dispute before President George Bush leaves office. Athens, according to the media, has informed Nimetz that there's no need for him to come to Greece, because the country's position on the matter is clear.
