COUNCIL OF EUROPE TO REVEAL NEW REPORT ON CIA'S SECRET PRISONS

The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe will reveal Wednesday the second report, drafted by Swiss senator Dick Marty, on the secret detention centers and illegal transfer of detainees in certain Council of Europe member countries.
The document accuses Romania, together with other European countries, for allowing such actions to take place in its territory. Reportedly, the "arrested, who were of great importance to USA" were held in secret CIA-run prisons in Poland and Romania between 2002 and 2005.
The Romanian delegation within Council of Europe Parliamentary Assembly submitted yesterday 8 motions on correcting Dick Marty's report. In line with the motions, Romania and Poland are to be excluded from the document, outlining the alleged existence of secret prisons, since "there were no evidence, not even minimal, for the accusations".
In November 2005, Dick Marty was commissioned by the Council of Europe to draft a report on the secret prisons and illegal transfer of detainees by CIA. Over the course of the Council of Europe Parliamentary Assembly in June 2006, Marty launched his first report, which triggered many issues due to the information "gaps" in the document. He was then authorised to draft a fresh report.

GOVERNMENT, OPPOSITION IRON OUT DIFFERENCES REGARDING LAW ON PUBLIC PROSECUTOR'S OFFICE

Ruling and opposition parties made a headway in terms of the law on public prosecutor's office, VMRO-DPMNE leader Nikola Gruevski and SDSM leader Radmila Sekerinska told reporters after their meeting in MPs Club in Skopje on Wednesday.
The participants at the meeting agreed to settle the remaining open issues at the forthcoming leaders' meeting on Sunday.
- We've reached an agreement on almost all issues. We've also accepted most of the demands by the opposition. There are one or two issues that need to be settled on Sunday, stated Prime Minister and VMRO-DPMNE leader Nikola Gruevski.
SDSM president Radmila Sekerinska confirmed that a progress has been made on several segments of the law on public prosecutor's office.
- SDSM's motion on boosting the role of the Public Prosecutor's Council was accepted. In general, the public prosecutor will be elected by the Parliament upon a proposal by the Government, but only if the Council approves it.
The leaders fell short of discussing the constitution of the Judicial Council. The issue remains open at the Sunday meeting.
In addition to VMRO-DPMNE and SDSM leaders, today's meeting was attended by leaders of DPA, NSDP, VMRO-NP, DOM, LP, LDP, DS, PDP as well as by presidents of the parties of smaller ethnic communities represented in the Parliament. There was no DUI representative.
This was leaders' third meeting following last week's debates - where participants agreed in principal on unblocking the judicial reforms - and Tuesday's meeting dedicated to the new law on public prosecution's office.
