REGIONAL FREE TRADE AGREEMENT OF INTEREST FOR SEE COUNTRIES, EC SPOKESPERSON SAYS

The European Commission backs the creation of a regional Free Trade Agreement for Western Balkans' countries, because we wish to boost trade, investment and economic development in the region, stated for MIA spokesperson for enlargement in the European Commission, Krisztina Nagy.
She said that the creation of a single regional trade agreement would replace the current web of 31 bilateral trade agreements.
"The conclusion of the bilateral trade agreements have already contributed to a substantial increase in a mutual trade in the region. However intraregional trade is still lower than its potential," Nagy said.
"The Commission doesn't have a specific view on the exact method to achieve this goal. Many options are being considered: one could create a new agreement or amend and expand the current CEFTA agreement," she said.
"In case CEFTA would be used, it would have to be amended. For example the accession criteria would have to be changed in order to enable all of Western Balkans to join. It would also be necessary to modernize the agreement and add some provisions, such as competition, services and public procurement," Nagy said.
"Fragmented markets do not make sense economically. So, it is really in the interest of the countries concerned to reach a single regional trade agreement for Southeast Europe. Citizens would greatly benefit of stronger economic growth and more job opportunities. And it is clear that any such regional integration would go hand in hand with the ongoing integration to the EU market," stated for MIA EC spokesperson for enlargement, Krisztina Nagy.
