ECONOMIC COOPERATION PRIORITY FOR
MACEDONIA AND RUSSIA
Russia and Macedonia have
historically enjoyed good, friendly and constructive relations without any
problems and future bilateral cooperation should focus on improvement of the
economic ties, Macedonian and Russian Foreign Ministers Ilinka Mitreva and
Sergey Lavrov said at Wednesday's press conference.
Macedonian FM said that they had discussed political and economic
cooperation, situation in the region and international issues.
"The relations with Russia are priority for Macedonia," FM Mitreva said,
adding that the talks with Russian FM were mainly focused on economic
cooperation.
"We have agreed on holding of 3rd meeting of inter-governmental commission
for trade, economic and science-technical cooperation in January 2005, which
will be focused on reviewing possibilities for trade liberalisation, trade
exchange increase and Macedonian export to Russia, cooperation in the energy
sphere and participation of the Russian partners on Macedonian market,"
Mitreva said. Inter-governmental agreement on regulation of clearing debt of
the former USSR towards Macedonia was agreed to be signed soon.
Russian FM announced signing of series of economic, military-technical and
cultural agreements for next year, which is expected to happen during the
visit of FM Mitreva to Moscow.
Lavrov stressed the role of Macedonia for the stability in the region and
the support for sooner demarcation of the Macedonian northern border.
"Russia assesses Macedonia's role for maintenance of the Balkan stability as
very important and we support every initiative which comes from Macedonian
side. We have expressed our support for demarcation of the border between
Macedonia and Serbia and Montenegro in the part to Kosovo."
Lavrov explained the Russia's support of the resolution, which was reviewed
in regard to this issue at the UN Security Council. "In the UN Security
Council frameworks with participation of the Macedonian government
modalities for resolving of those problems should be found. Government in
Belgrade, UNMIK and provisional organs of self-government in Kosovo should
also take part. This is the most important issue because once solved, I
assure you that money and people will be found who will conduct the border
demarcation," Sergey Lavrov said.
Mitreva and Lavrov also discussed the cultural cooperation and possibility
for opening cultural centres in both countries.
Two ministers signed a Working Consultations Plan between Macedonian and the
Russian Federation Foreign Affairs Ministries for 2005-2006.
Minister Lavrov said that Macedonian President Branko Crvenkovski accepted
the invitation from the Russian President Vladimir Putin to attend the
ceremony on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the Victory over Fascism
in Moscow next year.
