OPPOSITION SUPPORTERS FORMED HUMAN BARRIERS IN KIEV
Dozens of
opposition supporters formed human barriers near the Ukrainian presidency
saying they wanted to prevent violence, as special forces ringed the
building on a fourth day of mass protests.
As thousands of protesters camped overnight in nearby Independence Square,
demanding a reversal of the presidential election officially won by
Ukraine's pro-Russia prime minister, some formed cordons at either end of
the road that leads to the presidency nearby.
"Nobody must provoke the police," they said, fearing retaliation.
A man dressed in military gear, who said he was a defence ministry colonel,
urged the security forces by loudspeaker to join the opposition protests.
"You will be our heroes. You will be covered with flowers instead of being
covered with shame as you are now," he said.
Opposition leader Viktor Yushchenko claims the weekend election was stolen
by the state in favour of Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovich, who was
Wednesday officially declared the winner by the central election commission.
Former Polish President Lech Walesa will go to Ukraine Thursday to help
mediate the stand off following the disputed presidential elections.
